German eSailing National Championship underway

After a successful 2019 German eSailing National Championship, the Deutsche Segler-Verband (German Sailing Federation) will run a second season in 2020 in partnership with World Sailing and Virtual Regatta.

The 2020 Championship commenced on 1 March and will run through to September where a German eSailing National Champion will be crowned.

Johannes Bahnsen from Hamburg Sailing Club won the inaugural edition last year and will be aiming to defend his title.

DSV President Mona Küppers commented, “eSailing is now well established in sailing. The world’s biggest regattas such as the “Transat Jacques Vabre” run virtual regattas in parallel to the event. We see it as a complement to sailing, not a replacement.

“In addition to trips and regattas on the water, many sailors use this virtual form of sailing for relaxation. At the same time, there are also opportunities to promote the sport to a younger genderation and I am therefore very pleased that we will host another German championship this year and hopefully break the record of 800 participants.”

Alongside the domestic honours, the top 10 from the German Championship will also automatically qualify for the eSailing World Championship Finals Playoff where they’ll have a chance to qualify for an all-expenses paid trip to the Live Final at an international destination TBC.
